Dominion Dental Spa: Invisalign

At Dominion Dental, we understand the importance of both dental health and the cosmetics of a smile.  Straight teeth are not only beautiful; they are actually healthier.

To give our patients the benefit of a healthy, beautiful smile, we are proud to offer Invisalign orthodontic treatment.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign uses three-dimensional digital technology to create a series of plastic aligners.  At Dominion Dental Spa, an exact replica of your teeth is obtained through our iTero intraoral scanner.  You do not have to have gooey dental impressions, which are messy and can cause gagging.  The 3D scan from the iTero is digitally sent to AlignTech orthodontic lab.

An orthodontic lab technician realigns the teeth in a virtual 3D form.  This virtual model of your teeth is used to communicate back and forth between your dentist and the lab technician to achieve the desired results.

The aligners are then fabricated using CAD/CAM technology and sent to your dentist.

These aligners use carefully prescribed forces to move the teeth.  Because the material is clear and fits the teeth intimately, Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible.

How Is Invisalign Healthy?

Straightening your teeth without unsightly metal brackets and wires is not just a cosmetic issue.  Of course, clear aligners are less noticeable.  The brackets and wires of traditional orthodontic treatment contain countless nooks and crannies for the buildup of plaque and bacteria.  Many patients develop cavities and gum disease while wearing braces.

Because Invisalign aligners are removable, they allow you to clean your teeth more effectively during orthodontic treatment.  You simply remove the aligners in order to brush and floss and use mouthrinse.  By keeping your teeth clean, you can lower your risk for cavities and gum disease while you straighten your teeth.

Eating with traditional braces often causes impaction or retention of food.  This food debris also increases the risk for cavities and gum disease.  The aligners are also removed for eating and drinking anything besides water.  This means there is no hardware to catch food debris as with braces.

The end result of Invisalign is a healthier, easier-to-clean mouth.  Straight teeth with no gaps have fewer “hiding spots” for plaque and bacteria.  Teeth that have been straightened are much easier to clean with your toothbrush and floss.

How is Invisalign Cosmetic?

Invisalign is effective in correcting many misalignments of teeth.  Invisalign repositions teeth through the use of small, carefully-directed movements that are safe and maintain the health of the jawbone.

  • Crowded, crooked or overlapped teeth
  • Rotated teeth
  • Uneven teeth
  • Teeth with gaps or spacing
  • Crossbites (when one or more lower teeth protrudes outside the upper teeth, instead of fitting underneath as they should)

All of the above conditions can be corrected and realigned with Invisalign.  The end result is a smile with straight teeth that are properly positioned in the dental arch.

How Long Does Invisalign Take?

Invisalign is uniquely customized to each patient’s individual needs.  Treatment time will be different for each person.  Average treatment time for an adult with mild to moderate crowding or spacing is 12-18 months.

What Is The Most Important Thing to Know About Invisalign?

You are in control!  Because the aligners are removable, the success of Invisalign treatment relies heavily on the patient.  The aligners only work when they are on the teeth.  They must be worn for at least 22 hours a day to effectively move the teeth as prescribed.  You should remove them only for eating, drinking something other than water, and cleaning your teeth.

A patient who is committed to wear his or her aligners consistently and diligently will finish with a beautiful smile.
